toosum Snack Bars Review

I was recently sent 3 different flavors of toosum Snack Bars to try.  As a mom on the go and with a toddler who loves snacks, I am always looking for healthy foods for both of us to eat.  I was really excited when I was asked to test out the snack bars.

Let's talk a little bit about the company.  What does toosum mean?  It comes from the old English word "toothsome" and it means temptingly tasty and delicious.  Toosum's mission, as stated on their website, "To nourish a community of global citizens with delicious, healthful shelf-stable snack foods .  At toosum, we scour the world for the most wholesome ingredients and bring you 'Global Goodness.'" Also, the founder Peter Guyer had found that each region has it's own special goodness to share, for example- Slim bars were inspired by Asia with the cherries and plums.

toosum are gluten free, non GMO,  and only 100 calories per bar and the best part is...you can actually pronounce everything in the ingredients!  These bars did not last long in my house at all!  I received Slim bars that have cherries and plums, the Energize Bars with acai and cranberries, and the Digest bars with greek yogurt and blueberries.  For gluten free they are pretty good!

So I have to say that I was excited and a little skeptical at first because I am not gluten free (GASP, I know) but I do try to eat whole grains and things that are gluten free, so my family and I don't go into gluten, bloated, overload.  I have made plenty of gluten free snacks but the last gluten free granola bars that I had purchased, definitely left something to be desired!

The day I received them I was having coffee with a friend and had her try one and she instantly said, "this is pretty good for gluten free!"  I also handed one off to my daughter, who devoured it.  I thought the Energize and the Slim (which were my favorite) had a lot more flavor than the Digest that had the greek yogurt and the blueberries, but I'm sure everyone has their own opinions on what they like.    I just couldn't enough of both the Slim and Energize with the flavors of the cherries and plums as well as the cranberries and acai.  I guess I liked the combination of the more tart fruit.  My daughter on the other hand didn't care which flavor I gave her.  I thought the bars were nice and soft and packed a lot of goodness in with the fiber content and only being 100 calories. It is a great snack and I thought it filled me up.  I would love to try the Calm ones as well that has chamomile and coconut in them, yum!

So at the end of the day, if people are wondering can healthy and gluten free be delicious?  Well, my answer is yes!  Let's look at the ingredients, as you can see you can read and understand what each ingredient is!

Here are the benefits and the ingredients listed from their website:

Over all, I really enjoyed the bars and I would like to order more and have them in my pantry, my car, my diaper bag.  They are pretty tasty and really easy on the go snack, not to mention healthy!  I definitely would like to order some and take them with us to the pool this summer.

Where can you get there snack bars?
You can purchase toosum bars on their website as well as get more info and FAQ about the products: www.toosum.com.  they can also be found on amazon now: find them here {affiliate link}

Keep it Clean gift bucket idea from April {guest post}

Today, I'm so glad to have April over on my blog and how cute is this idea?!  Happy Friday :)

Hi Guys, I am April from illistyle.com and I love making sweet little gift baskets. Since we just bought our first home and we are moving this weekend (squeee!) I have been thinking of ways to be hospitable to people that might move into my new neighborhood, since now I will be all legit and established as a home owner. This gift would also be perfect for someone going off to college, or a friend about to make a move. I think that the official name for this will be my "Keep It Clean" bucket. Here's what you need (I grabbed all this at the Target dollar spot):

Keep it clean bucket supplies - illistyle.com

Pretty dish gloves, some Meyers All Purpose cleaner, Clorox Wipes, a sponge, and some post-its. These are essential to help those new neighbors feel like someone in their new community cares about them in their time of need... the cleaning supplies for obvious reasons, but the post-its too. If you have ever moved you know that there seems to be this crazy list(s) of what you have to buy next time you go out. From reminders about light bulbs to taking drink and pizza orders for all those friends-who-helped-you-moved, post-its are just a good idea. Throw these babies in a dollar spot bucket and you have yourself a lovely little gift for under $8!

Mother's Day Printable

Happy Friday!

Happy Mother's Day weekend to all the mamas out there and yes, your fur babies count!

I am a SUCKER for decorating for every holiday and I've been staring at a computer messing around for a little bit on learning photoshop and learning how to make my own printable.  So why not share what I've been working on it and who doesn't love chalkboard printables?!

The love a mother has for their child is indescribable and while there are really sweet and tearful quotes out there, I found a quote that make me laugh and recognizes how hard it is to be mama (some days more than others)

I framed mine and I put it up on my bookshelves around my fireplace. I may just have to keep moving it around my house because I kinda really like it!

All you have to do is right click on the image below and save it.
It's an 8 x 10 print so it's perfect to frame, you will just have to trim the edges to make it fit! I used thicker card stock but regular paper works too!

Here is the printable framed on my bookshelf.  I think it would also look awesome on wood or maybe even slap some mod podge on it and put it on a canvas to hang on a wall somewhere.
Print it out for your mom, a friend, or yourself!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Sedona Part 1

I fell head over heels in love with Sedona.  What a beautiful place!  We had so much fun exploring, drinking prickly pear margaritas and climbing up some red rocks and learning about the area.  How beautiful this world is and so many things to see.  This has started my itch to start traveling more and seeing more of the US.  I've always had the itch to travel and see the world, but I think sometimes we don't realize all the beautiful things to see and do right here in our own country. We stayed at the Sedona Rouge Hotel & Spa which is in West Sedona and we really liked it, it was on a main street and it was right next to a grocery store but it was so close to all the restaurants we checked out and had great reviews as well as it was 5 minutes away from Uptown Sedona where all the touristy stuff and shops were.

One thing that everyone I spoke to recommended doing a Pink Jeep Tour and yes we highly recommend it!  We had a blast.  We did a 3 hour tour and it was a bit long for us considering we roamed around all day and went shopping and then did the tour.  I think we were back at the hotel watching TV and reading by 9:30 (yep, we are officially old)

Anyway, here are some pics from our first night/day in Sedona!

We rented a convertible and drove from Phoenix to Sedona.  I was so mesmerized when we got into Sedona, I didn't even get pictures.  I think I kept repeating all weekend, "how does this even exist?!"  MIND BLOWN.  Ok on to pictures.

Views from our room.  We did make sure we had a view from our room! I would wake up roll over and see those red rocks.

We drove out a little ways and ended up checking out Slide Rock Park.  You could swim down there but we didn't have our suits and it was warmer than usual but that morning I was still in long sleeves, that didn't stop people though.

Then we went up to the Airport Vista.  It must be so terrifying and exciting to land at that airport.  As someone who is not the best flier in the world, I would probably get horribly sweaty palms and pee my pants, maybe just a little bit! Can we just talk about how the Arizona Sky is absolutely perfect!

Towards the bottom of the hill is a rock you could climb up to get some views so in true fashion, I did a yoga pose...

Here is the Rock we climbed:

and here are some of my favorite pictures from the Pink Jeep tour, if anyone is interested, the tour we did was Scenic Rim and Broken Arrow.  The Broken Arrow part was the coolest part of the tour and it's a tour all on it's own.  Our tour guide was so funny and we had a really good time!

this picture is interesting, we are at a spot called Chicken Point and you can see where that white line is and it's actually called white line.  No joke, mountain bikers get up there and ride along that line.  I'm serious, you tube it!

Overall, we enjoyed our first full day in Sedona!

Make your own mud pies, inside and on...your body! Giveaway {CLOSED}

So a few things....

We are back from vacation and I CAN NOT wait to share with you some of our adventures as well as my must do list while visiting Sedona!

What do you think about my new blog design?!!!  I'm so excited and loving it.  High Five to Peaches & Cream Designs!

To help celebrate my new blog post, why not do it with a giveaway for some free health products?!

Now I've been trying to incorporate all natural products, whether it be food, cleaning products, body care products, you name it!  I was so excited when Redmond sent me products to review and are so generous to be giving some of them away from their Redmond Clay line.

Did you know that Clay is AWESOME for your body internally and externally?  Yes as in you can eat it?!

So let's go back and get a little bit of background about Clay.  Native Indians would carry a ball of clay with them and would add it to their meals and would also use it to prevent and treat illnesses such as dysentery, food poisoning, and other sicknesses.  What is in this healing clay?  According to Redmond,  in the area that is now Redmond, Utah, a range of volcanos had erupted sending ash into the ancient Sundance Sea.  The water in the sea then evaporated, leaving a bed of mineral- rich bentonite clay.

What is bentonite clay?

Bentonite Clay is formed from the volcanic ash and has a negative electrical charge attracting positively charged toxins.  Most toxins are positively charged therefore the clay naturally rids the body of toxins as it pulls and holds toxins into it's core.

What is special or unique about Redmond Clay?
According to Redmond, "Most clay deposits are high in either sodium (sodium bentonite clay) or calcium (calcium bentonite clay).  Redmond Clay comes from an unusual deposit, high in both sodium and calcium which gives our clay a unique combination of properties.  Redmond Clay has a strong pulling capacity, which helps draw bacteria out of the body and it also has high swelling capacity , which helps it bind more effectively to toxins internally." Also Redmond Clay contains more than 60 trace minerals, that's a lot of minerals that help keep our bodies healthy!

So what exactly does this healing clay help with?

Internally: Acid Indigestion, reflux, constipation, occasional diarrhea, detoxification, stomachache, severe digestive issues, electrolyte replacement, hydration, fatigue, leg cramps, and mineral supplement

Externally: Burns, Bruises/black eyes, insect stings/bites, diapers rash, detox, severe dry skin, facials, poison oak/ivy, ring worm, scrapes/road rash, sprains, and athlete's foot.

Now you might be asking how in the world can you treat all of this?  You can drink it, take capsules, mix it with water and and use  it as a poultice (making a clay burrito with it or covering your skin and placing cloth and/or plastic wrap on it, clay baths, foot bath, baby powder, and even toothpaste.

So, I've been using the Redmond Clay and I've used it in foot baths and the tub.  I think the foot baths because it makes my feet softer and on top of it gives me detoxification through my feet! Also I've used the Facial mud which is the hydrated clay for facials and my skin is noticeably softer and looks better just after one use.

I have been loving these products.  I've had some break outs and dry skin from this winter on my face and dry skin on my hands and then I was sunburned from Sedona (oh I know poor me haha) but it really helped.  I haven't taken it internally yet but I've been wanting the hubby to try it for his acid reflux.

What I have been using is another line they have called Earthpaste and it has the Redmond Clay in the natural toothpaste and I've been using that everyday.  I recently had a root canal because I had a cracked tooth and using that toothpaste, my tooth wasn't as sore as they said and it felt a lot better within DAYS! I am a believer in this clay!

So lucky for you guys, Redmond is giving away not one but THREE products from their Redmond Clay line!

They are giving away their 10 oz Redmond clay Powder, a tube of the Facial Mud (my personal favorite!), and a bottle of the daily detox clay capsules.  So done and done, you get the powder, the hydrated clay, and then already in capsules to ingest!

Giveaway will last until Sunday night until Midnight CST.  I will announce the winner next Monday!

New Addition- No I'm not prego.

Back in November, we stopped into Petco to research fish for Miss Isla.  She LOVE LOVE LOVES fish! When we got there, they had a little adoption center so of course the animal lovers that we are, we took a peek.  Isla stuck her hand in the cage of this silky long haired black cat and then what does the cat do, head butts the cage and her hand.  He continues to follow us through his cage and watch us.

Logan and I really want a dog, but it's winter here (yep like most of us, its still snowing in March) and we don't have a fenced in back yard and well a dog and a toddler is really like having two kids. I was a little shocked when Logan said, should we adopt him?

We filled out the application and went back to Petco to meet with him and of course he was a little scared and the only person he would come out from under the table for was Isla!  We decided to bring him home and the rest is history.  He has been an amazing cat- doesn't mess with our furniture, is very good with Isla, and is super snuggly.  He has also lived with a dog and likes them so in time, we will get him another furry friend to play with.

So introducing our main man Spike, yes I know it's an amazing name for a cat.  I can't take credit for his name, he was already named that.

Freshly Picked Moccasin Giveaway! {CLOSED}

So have you recently seen Shark Tank? If so,  you may have seen Susan Petersen on it from Freshly Picked Moccasins.  After her second baby was born, she was on a mission to make a durable, well-made shoe, and ones that would stay on a baby's foot.

From starting off working with scrap leather from a yard sale at her kitchen table and trying out different designs, she has created adorable moccasins, that not only look so sweet on a kid's foot, but stay on as well.  She is a true entrepreneur that convinced her brother who owns an window installation business to give her the old windows.  She banged out the glass and at the end of one summer, recycled all the aluminum for $200 to start the business.

The moccasins have been featured in US Weekly, People, Parenting Magazine, to name a few magazines and have been spotted on celebrity kiddos's tiny feet like Kourtney Kardashian and Jaime King.

What else is really awesome?  Freshly Picked is letting me give one of my readers a pair of their moccasins!  You get to choose any color and they will send them to you! Yes, a boy or a girl can wear the moccasins and they go up to a size 10 in kids!

Here are some of my favorite colors:

This giveaway ends February 10th at midnight(CST).  All you have to do is go to Freshly Picked's website http://freshly-picked.myshopify.com and come back and comment which color you would LOVE to win!  That's it!  I will be using random.org number generator to select the winner.

To up the ante on winning, here is a way to get more entries

Memories

Today is a day that I will hold on tight to memories.

Today is a day that I will try to smile through.

The memories of my Dad is what helps me get through this day every year.

 To name a few-

The time he ate a warhead and it was so sour, he spit it across the kitchen table.

How hard he laughed when my grandfather ate cat food on the counter when he thought it was snack mix in a bowl on Christmas.

Or,  the time when he would pretend to do the Janet Jackson "If" dance for me when no one was watching.

When he showed up to pick me up from work at Osh Kosh and surprised me with a car and I said, "why does that car have my brother's license plates on it?"  Um duh.

All the times he and my mom would drive 10 hours from North Carolina to see me dance in college.

Even as a teenager and through college, he would wake me up at 5:30 on Christmas morning and ask me if I was going to open my presents.

The last time I danced with my dad at my brother Derek's wedding only to lose him 4 months later.

I miss him everyday and I hope I have made him proud.

New glasses! and a giveaway!

A few weeks ago I was asked to review my first product, glasses!  I've been looking for a new pair so hey, why not!  It's so hard to choose online because I have a narrow face and a lot of frames look ginormous on me, plus there are so many options to choose from! I decided to choose a colored frame and try to be a hip new mom...oh yes I said it.  If I can't have my body back right away...I can try to draw attention to another part of my body right?! I think my eyes are the only things that didn't get bigger from Miss Isla.

Firmoo is an online optical store and they have a lot of great styles to choose from!  You can even upload a picture of yourself to see what glasses you would like.  The customer service was very helpful with me, when I was loading my prescription I realized my PD was smaller than the options for the frames.  I had NO CLUE what my PD was, it's pupillary distance (the distance between each pupil). I apparently have a smaller distance than average from each pupil. I learn something new everyday or never paid attention to my prescription to begin with! Unfortunately for me, I would have to pay extra for the special lenses to be put in, but from the prices of the glasses compared to most optical places, $10 extra is really no big deal.  That's the only bad thing about my experience and well that's just because of the shape of my face. They didn't take long to come in and comes with a nice case and a cloth!

I didn't know what to expect from getting a free pair of glasses from some online store that are not $300 plus like they are at regular optical stores but I was impressed in how sturdy they were and the color was really similar to what I saw on my computer screen.  Buying a pair of burgundy glasses online, you never know what will up in the mail.  Do they have big designer names and the best quality, well no, however you can get fashionable glasses and with your prescription and some are as low as $8! I was really happy with my new frames and something different to wear from everyday glasses. Thanks Firmoo :)

Overall, I thought the different selections were great, it was easy to input your prescription, and the customer service was very helpful!

AND GUESS WHAT...

I'm giving away 2 $30 vouchers for their designer glasses and it gets better if I have more than 30 people enter...the first place winner gets a FREE PAIR OF GLASSES, how sweet is that, all complements of Firmoo.  When I announce the winners on the 25th you have until the 28th to use the vouchers and  just have to pay for the shipping. Just a quick little weekend giveaway! Check out the designer section of whats available here : http://www.firmoo.com/designer-eyeglasses.html
This giveaway is even for my international friends, just check here to make sure they can delivery to your area. http://www.firmoo.com/help-c-10.shtml

I'm thinking these glasses will be my next ones, I've been loving and wanting a pair of tortoise frames forever, http://www.firmoo.com/eyeglasses-p-2141.html and I'm really digging these sunglasses in chocolate http://www.firmoo.com/prescription-sunglasses-p-1870.html

Here are the frames I selected, they are currently out of stock, bummer:

Still have questions about Firmoo, go check them out and check out their FAQ page: http://www.firmoo.com/help.shtml

a Rafflecopter giveaway

*these opinions are solely mine and in exchange for the review, I was given a pair of glasses and was in no other way compensated for this review.

* I will be checking all the entries, so please don't try to pull a fast one.  My husband tries to and guess what, It never works :) Oh and good luck.

To My Husband

It's been a year since we have officially said I do and what a year it has been.

You helped me plan this wedding in 5 months in a place without our friends and family from home and even though I knew you really didn't care about certain details, you still helped as much as you could- for a dude anyway :)

We did nothing traditional, but we did it together. You saw me try on my dress a billion times and reassured me about every other decision every step of the way. People gasped when we told them you had seen my dress, but it worked for us. We spent the night together in our own apartment the night before the wedding and hung out and saw each other on and off the entire day.  I wouldn't have had it any other way.  You were my rock through out all the good times and the very bad times of the planning process and I wanted you near me the entire day. You even brought me lunch :)
I'm so thankful to have a husband like you who did all that and even helped with crafts even with your insane work schedule.

In this year we have done SO much.  We got married, bought a new car, moved to Kansas, found out we were having a baby, moved to Chicago, bought a house, moved back to Kansas City and now this month we are having our baby girl!  Everyone says your first year of marriage is the hardest, well if that's the case then the next fifty years plus will be a breeze. But hey, can we just go on a vacation in 2013 and not have any "big" events?

I know I don't thank you enough for all the things you make possible for me, I hope you know how much I appreciate you each and every day (even the days where you drive me a little crazy).  We really have grown together over the years and became each others best friends and what more could anyone ask for.

I don't care what anyone says about marriage, yes it's work and somedays harder than others, but being married is pretty amazing.

Happy 1st Anniversary my love...

Sunday treat

I am continuing on with my Sunday treat blog posts...a couple of days late. Whoops. No gender reveal today, sad I know I will but it's coming soon I promise :) so Saturday we did some flea market shopping to start getting ideas for the new house. In Kansas City, there is a flea market/restaurant /bar called Westport flea market bar & grill (obviously). They have been voted as the best burger in the city and since I am always looking for a delicious burger and fries, I had to try this out! We didn't go in the flea market, but we sat in the bar section and ate. I give the burger a thumbs up...it was pretty good. Look at the sweet car that's parked out front.

Sunday Treat!

Since I really look forward to food these days...I figured why not start a weekly post of something absolutely delicious I ate over the weekend. Lately I've been loving ice cream and my hubby loves it because he loves ice cream too. On our way home from a friend's last night we made a pit spot at a Sheridan's Lattes & Frozen Custard. I heart custard it's so creamy and delicious. I grew up eating custard in Lewiston, NY at Hibbard's ( also very delicious and I'm most definitely getting the black raspberry custard when I go home to visit). When I saw that their special right now was blackberry cobbler and vanilla custard with whipped cream I had to try it and yes I ate the entire thing! The warm cobbler and the thick cold custard really hit the spot. If you ever find yourself around a Sheridan's, definitely check it out!

Check out their locations and menu online at http://www.sheridansfrozencustard.com/

The Bet

T-G-I-almost- Friday!

Once again the hubby is flying back home but we no longer have to spend time apart, from here on out we are going to be here or in Chicago together!

Next week is our big gender reveal for the little monkey. Logan thinks our house is going to be full of superheroes and fart jokes, I think we are going to have pig tails and tutus.  So we had a friendly wager, if he is right, baby cook will be buying him a new grill for fathers day to put on our deck at our new house (that we bought last weekend! Fingers crossed our inspection goes well this weekend)  If it's a girl, I'm allowed to get the kinda pricey bedding from Pottery Barn kids with the cutest elephants ever on it....so here is a poll for you guys to vote who this little monkey is!  The big gender reveal will be next week :)

Happy Friday!

So today is a good day...not only because it's Friday but because my hubby comes back to KC tonight!  I'm glad we have technology like FaceTime and Skype but it sure isn't the real thing.  Living between two cities is not ideal however it will be over in a couple of months and then we can resume whatever normal is for us.  I saw this commercial the other day and I'm in love, made me miss my husband (even though we are apart, I don't know what I would ever do without him) and how life is too short not to be happy and be with the one you love.  Have a great weekend!

Mother's Day

So technically, this was my first Mother's Day.  That's right people I'm pregnant!  A few of you were wondering when I was finally going to make this announcement...here it is my friends!  This little monkey of ours will be making an appearance sometime in the middle of October.  We will find out at the end of the month who this little person is.  It has been a wild year for us.  October, we got married, bought a new car, got a job (that I had to quit), moved to Kansas City in January, found out we are having a baby in early Feb, next day...Logan's company decides to move us again temporarily to Chicago! We worked it out though that we are coming back here to Kansas City and Logan will go to the job site (which was planned anyway just not so soon) to get ready for the baby in my 3rd trimester, so 2 more months...am I really almost halfway there already?  I also have been flying back and forth for all my doctors appointments and for all of Logan's meetings and trainings, etc.  So now we have started the house hunt, we are growing up!  So I'm here in KC for the rest of the month trying to get our lives somewhat organized, flying every other week was getting a little crazy. I was getting a little exhausted! We are also getting anxious to find out if baby cook is a boy or girl!

Anyway back to Mother's day, Logan was so sweet and bought me a few presents for my mama to be day.  He bought me a chain for my wedding rings, my fingers are starting to feel like sausages and well before they get stuck on my finger, we had to find another plan of attack besides getting the rings cut off.  I wish I had a plan of attack for my expanding arms, I feel like that's where I have gained all my baby weight so far...last time I checked that isn't where the baby is growing. Damn you hormones.

He also bought me these sweet pandora charms, a baby carriage and a year of the dragon charm since this year is the year of the dragon in chinese astrology. I can't wait to see him as a father! There is no one in the entire world I would want to share this with but him. There is a never a dull moment with the Slogans.  Needless to say, my root canal I had a few weeks ago was a little miserable because I couldn't take anything but tylenol.  Happy belated Mother's day to all the wonderful moms out there!

Cubs, Bulls, and Root Canals oh my!

The other week proved to be quite the eventful week...beginning with me flying back to Chicago with a horrible toothache.  Back in college, I cracked my tooth eating beef jerky, I don't even eat beef jerky so I have no idea why I decided it was a good idea.  Since I didn't take care of it, I then had two exposed nerves in that tooth and my dentist at the time fixed it up so I wouldn't have to have a root canal.  Well, It came back with a vengeance...so here I am in the Kansas City airport researching dentists to call in the morning.  I did find a nice place in walking distance from our apartment.  I called them and they got me in within the hour!  My tooth was throbbing as I bent over to tie my shoes and then walking on the concrete sidewalks really made it throb.  So they looked at my tooth and did a bunch of tests but unfortunately the only thing they could do is a root canal!  BOOO...my wonderful husband came over from work to make sure I was ok to get home and then left work early after a meeting to bring me food I could eat.  It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it wasn't the way I wanted to start off my week.  But I did have a very pretty view while waiting until I was all numbed up.

So if you ever find yourself in Chicago needing a good dentist with a great view, visit the peeps at Downtown Dental!

The next day we ventured out to Wrigley Field.  I have actually never been to a MLB baseball game.  Why not make Wrigley Field my first experience.  It was scarf day, so they handed out cubs scarves at the beginning of the game.  They played the Cardinals, the hubby's favorite baseball team and well unfortunately the Cubs tied it in the 9th and then went on to beat them :(
Yes I'm wearing two scarves and Logan is wearing a cubs scarf and a cardinals hat
Pretty good seats

Wednesday I had to go back to the dentist :( but this time it was only for my permanent filling although my gums were still pretty sore!  I treated myself to a chai tea latte and my couch for the rest of the afternoon.

On Thursday, we went to the United Center and saw the Bulls play.  Those games are a ton of fun.  We had a blast.  As much as I heart Sabretooth tiger from the Buffalo Sabres...Benny the Bull was pretty hysterical too.  I always thought that would be the best job ever, no one knows who you really are and you get to mess with everyone and act crazy!  Think about it...BEST JOB EVER. I googled mascots and although they won't list his salary, reports say that NBA mascots can make $200,000 or more.  Reason #2 why this is the best job ever!

So there is a week in review...we are in Kansas City this week, we bought a new camera and I can't wait to share some of the pictures we have taken :)
